Some of the four most ominous words in the Bible are found in Romans chapter 1. They are “God gave them over/up”. This phrase is repeated three times in Romans 1 (24, 26, 28).
God gave them up to uncleanness, in the lust of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies amongst themselves (v. 24). This is a sexual revolution, their sinful desires were more important than God and He abandons them to their desires. The result is that they worship creation in a thousand ways rather than the Creator God.
Then God gave them up to vile passions (v. 26). When this occurs, the women are affected first, exchanging natural relations for unnatural ones. This is lesbianism, as we learn from the next verse, followed by depraved homosexuality among the men.
Finally, God gives them over to a depraved or reprobate mind (v. 28). This comes as they conclude that God isn’t worth knowing after all (John 17:3). And why does this happen? Because “they didn’t see fit to acknowledge God any longer,” verse 28. These verses keep going back to the reason: They rejected God. They rejected God. They rejected God.
A depraved mind is a mind that doesn’t function, sometimes it’s translated “reprobate mind.” The Greek word means “non-functioning.” One aspect of that is when you’re a man, and you think you’re a woman. It’s a kind of insanity where the mind tries to bend reality to ideology. This is the fulfillment of a divine judgment in Romans 1. This is not reversible.
I used to wonder what in the world the reprobate mind could be, but we’re living in the middle of it. It is irrational insanity, it is ridiculous, and yet it is so strongly embedded in our culture that some of our leaders are making laws to protect and encourage insane people. And some so-called Adventists are celebrating it.
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is God’s communication agent. His task is to strengthen, convict of sin, guide to truth, protect, comfort, and restrain evil. He relates to believers and unbelievers differently.
Believers — The Holy Spirit dwells within us as a believer. His internal presence is a gift that follows repentance and conversion (Acts 2:37-41). He guides, comforts, and protects the believer.
Unbelievers — The Holy Spirit is external, seeking to convict us of sin and guide us to a realization of our need of Jesus. This is not an internal presence, that is for believers only.
When God ‘gives people over’ I believe that He withdraws His Holy Spirit from them as an external presence. There is no more conviction of sin, and no more restraining the forces of evil for that person. This is evident in the final verses of Romans 1:
“Being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them” (vv. 29-32).
That’s what you see every day on the news (if you look at it). This is the reality of the Holy Spirit gradually being withdrawn from the world. God gave them over.
Listen friend. When our Adventist colleges and churches are boldly hosting LGBTQ campmeetings, they have been ‘given over.’
No Christian/Adventist parent should send their children to institutions that celebrate the LGBTQ agenda. To do so is to sin against heaven and against your children. It will cause God to give you and your children over (Romans 1:24-28).
Yes, it is that serious.

“For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due” (Romans 1:26-27).
