Former GC VP and President of Oakwood University Endorses Kamala Harris

Calvin Rock released a video this week endorsing Harris for president.

Rock intones in the video that the slogan Make America Great Again (MAGA) is a racist slogan, citing a few childhood memories from Jim Crow south. Let’s apply some critical thinking to his video.

When someone says make something great again, what does that mean? It implies that something good or desirable has been lost and we ought to try to recover it. The statement by itself doesn’t define what ‘great’ means, that is left up to the person making the statement.

When Rock interprets great to mean pre civil rights segregation it begs the question “How do you know this?” Let’s get specific, where has the architect of the statement called for pre civil rights segregation? Rock starts with the conclusion that MAGA is racist. He’s probably heard this, but can he give an actual example? He doesn’t provide any in his video.

Question to Seventh-day Adventists “Do you find the statement “Make America Great Again” to be racist? Let’s not go with what other people think (Calvin Rock included) but let’s learn how to think and analyze for ourselves. Do you see anything racist in the slogan? Disregard other people’s opinions.

The term great isn’t defined here, but I interpret great to mean, well, great. Does great mean racism? Of course not. Great means: amazing, awesome, cool, excellent, fabulous, fantastic, terrific.

The only thing great in Calvin Rock’s video is the leap of logic that he uses.

Here’s a short video that uses critical thinking and a Christian worldview to analyze popular narratives,

Evangelicals for Harris

Notice that Rock aligns with Evangelicals for Harris in this video. It is a politically left social justice group, thoroughly analyzed in Megan Basham’s excellent book “Shepherds for Sale.”

Jim Ball (Ph.D., Drew University) is the president of Evangelicals for Harris. He is also Executive Vice President for Policy and Climate Change at the Evangelical Environmental Network, and the architect of the “What Would Jesus Drive” slogan designed to shame Christians into accepting the climate change global warming agenda.

Conclusion

Rock’s video is a reminder that we should not substitute critical thinking with Critical Race Theory.

Instead of partisan politics, friends, let us think biblically, let us think honestly, and let us walk humbly with our God.
