Timothy Standish: Don't Abort Down Syndrome Babies

In one of the night time sessions at the GC Session in St. Louis, Dr. Timothy Standish, who is a Ph.D. biologist on the staff of the Geo-Science Research Institute at Loma Linda, gave a talk about science and belief in the Bible. Included in the middle of this talk was an appeal on behalf of babies with Trisomy 21, better known as Down Syndrome. They, too, bear the image of God, and we have no biblical ground for aborting them. Since we recently ran a column critical of James Standish, Timothy’s brother (they are sons of Russell Standish, the twin brother of Colin Standish; that generation of Standish brothers were famous for conservative SDA Church activism) we would like to recognize when the Standish family goes right, so to speak.

The value of every human life is based not upon Darwinism but upon the theistic, and specifically creationistic anthropology, the biblical worldview. This is the philosophical underpinning of Standish’s appeal on behalf of people with Trisomy 21. He also notes that the biblical worldview also underpins the endeavor of science, something we’ve noted here more than once.
