According to the Southern Accent, Southern Adventist University cultural clubs, like the Black Christian Union (BCU), Latin American Club (LAC) and Asian Club, will not be allowed to feature dancing this year at their annual cultural nights.
Dennis Negrón, vice president for Student Development indicated that these events have become more about dancing instead of culture. Negrón made the decision to halt the dancing this year.
During Gordon Bietz’s presidency, there was a pause on this dancing because it was getting out of control. That pause that was reversed by the previous President, Dave Smith. Now it appears that it is time to stop it again.
The current president Ken Shaw is a decent fellow.
Commentary
When culture is given too much space in our lives, it brings elements of the world into our hearts where they wage war against biblical principles (1 John 2:15-17).
Enrollment at Southern is up 9.9%. As a pastor said “When you begin to go the right direction, then you see the numbers increase.”
Some of the (progressive) students are disgruntled by this halt to dancing. Their arguments are that cultural dancing encourages diversity. This notion is a result of the diversity, inclusion and equity plague that is sweeping college campuses and woke corporations since 2020.
Bible examples of cultural dancing (Matthew 14:6-11; Exodus 32: 18-20).
We affirm Negrón and Southern University in their efforts to maintain Christian decorum in this school. Well done, Sirs.
Some current stats for Southern University:

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (1 John 2:15-16).
“Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it springs the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23).
