Who is Running the Columbia Union?

Dave Weigley retired today. Early.

Mid term.

His stated reasons were tending to his wife and dealing with legal & ethical issues surrounding his tenure as Kettering Health Chairman. We know this already.

What we don’t know, is who is at the helm of the Columbia Union. There have been no press releases, no statements, no attempt to inform the constituents of Columbia Union of who has taken Weigley’s place.

The current policy indicates that in the absence or death or retirement of a Union President, the executive secretary takes his place. That’s what he is there for.

Incidentally, a conference president retiring or resigning mid term is a sneaky way to allow a hand picked executive committee to select an interim president, bypassing the will or input of the constituency delegates at their regular constituency session.

One possible replacement is Celeste Bliden, the executive secretary of the Columbia Union. I am told that she would like to be president or interim president. However, the position of Conference or Union President is reserved for ordained men only according to the Working Policy and Model Constitution. The Bible supports this practice of male leadership, which is why we have it.

Alexander Bryant, chairman of the Union executive committee, would know this, as a president of the Division and a steward of the church structure and policies.

It’s odd that the Columbia Union has not been transparent about who the interim president is.

Stay tuned.
