Last Sunday, a Black Lives Matter protest took place in Berrien Springs.

Around 1,100 protest marchers met at 1 PM at the Howard Performing Arts Center on the Campus of Andrews University. They then marched to the Berrien Springs Public High School, where there were various speakers.

Details

  • The organizers of the protest were a mix of students and teachers. “Mrs. Meylin Allen, an [SDA] educator who also helped organize the peace-walk, says she is making sure her students at Berrien Springs High School feel that their voices are being heard.”

  • The protest lasted about three hours.

  • Speakers at the BS High School were Tim Nixon and a non-Adventist named Lonhi Sibande.

  • Tim Nixon called for justice for black people, women, immigrants, and LGBTQ in his speech.

  • Some of the Adventist protestors participating in this BLM protest were Dwight Nelson, Hyveth Williams, Kevin Paulson, Nick Miller, Mike Nixon, Anthony Bosman, Ranko Stefanovic, and Steve Toscano.

  • One Adventist individual went there to observe, saw a sign that said “Kill The Cops” and turned around and went home on his motorcycle. He said he didn’t get a picture of the sign.

  • Not all protestors were Seventh-day Adventists. Most were high schools students, and about 35-40% were SDA.

  • The Andrews University Vice President of diversity informed local High Schools to support this protest march.

  • After the protest was over in the school parking lot, a white fellow began yelling “Silence!” and the crowd responded “Violence now!” This was repeated five times. It was apparently rehearsed by experienced protesters. There were no reports of violence at the protest, however.

  • Many of these protestors were waxing eloquent about the need for ‘social distancing’ two weeks ago. Apparently social justice is now more important to them, because very few were practicing social distancing at the protest.

For individuals who no longer believe in the traditional biblical sins, racism is a godsend. It provides the moral drama of damnation and redemption, confession and absolution, in a way that is compatible with the larger secular culture and their own political ambitions.

“Oh, how Esau shall be searched out! How his hidden treasures shall be sought after! All the men in your confederacy shall force you to the border; The men at peace with you shall deceive you and prevail against you. Those who eat your bread shall lay a trap for you. No one is aware of it” (Obadiah 4:6-7).
